Glasgow Culture & Heritage

Glasgow's heritage dates from the 6th century when a settlement was founded by Saint Mungo on the bank of the River Clyde. In 1175 Bishop Jocelyn secured a charter from King William, making Glasgow a Burgh and by 1238 work had begun on a Cathedral, marking the city's significance as a centre of eccelsiastical activity.

The city's most famous twentieth century artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his circle were responsible for the creation of the Glasgow Art Nouveau style. Glasgow has more than twenty museums, galleries and historic houses and entrance to many of them are free – including the superb Burrell Collection, Mackintosh House and the Gallery of Modern Art.

The city of Glasgow first received it's charter in 1866 and the city's churches, cathedrals, art galleries, museums and domestic houses have a unique blend of historical and contemporary culture. Glasgow was voted the European Capital of Culture in 1998.
